MERCER COUNTY COMMON PLEAS COURT
PETIT JURY SERVICE
You have been summoned to appear for Petit Jury service in the Mercer County Common Pleas Court, Celina, Ohio. This information is provided to answer questions frequently asked by jurors.
REPORTING FOR JURY SERVICE - It is important that you follow the instructions on the letter you received. You must report at the time stated and should allow a full day (8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) for jury service.
LOCATION - You are to report to the third floor of the Mercer County Courthouse, 101 North Main Street, Celina, Ohio.
PARKING - You may park on the streets surrounding the courthouse. If you should receive a parking ticket, please advise the court.
CELL PHONE GUIDELINES - All cell phones must be turned off in the courtroom. Failure to comply with this guideline may result in sanctions.
ATTENDANCE FEE - A $30.00 attendance fee will be paid for each day you are required to report for duty. A check will be mailed to your home address, usually 10-15 days after service. If your address, phone number, or place of employment has changed, please report that to the court.
PROPER ATTIRE - In deference to the court, please dress neatly and appropriately. Casual business attire is required. Tank tops, shorts, and flip flops are not acceptable attire.
ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATES FOR EMPLOYER - An attendance certificate will be provided showing the dates you served and the attendance fees paid to you. Your employment is protected by law while you are serving as a juror. If you should have a problem with your employer in connection with your jury service, please contact the court immediately.
EXCUSES - We recognize that occasionally circumstances exist when persons cannot serve. All excuses must be submitted in writing prior to your scheduled appearance day. Please include the following information in your request: the nature of the hardship and, if the excuse is for medical reasons, a note from your doctor must be included. You may either mail your request to the address on your letter or fax it to 419-586-4000. Your letter will be reviewed by the judge, and you will receive notification of the judge's decision by mail.
WHY MUST I CALL THE RECORDED MESSAGE THE EVENING BEFORE REPORTING - Because many cases are settled within a day or so of trial, you are directed to call the recorded message the evening before you are to appear for jury duty. It's important that you listen carefully to the instructions. In some instances your case may be moved to another date or canceled. You will also receive information if you are to report. Should inclement weather or other emergency be a factor, this will also be included on the recorded message (419-584-2590) which can be accessed at any time.
A WORD OF THANKS - By serving as a juror, you are participating in the administration of justice. There is no more valuable service that a citizen can perform in support of our democratic government than the good faith performance of jury duty.
